Can New Year really bring any change in our life?

New Year is a wish, an inspiration to start life anew. It’s about moving on with life forgetting everything bad that happened in the past and restarting afresh with the new morning at the start of a new day. To equip with a new vision, a new dream, a new belief, a new life, and a new target. Is observing new year really that significant? Can New Year really bring any change especially if we are faced with unmendable problems in our life?

I know there are some pains that nothing can heal. There are some regrets that nothing can undo. Despite all those pain, sorrows, and regrets, life keeps going on. You have two ways to deal with the life that keeps going on no matter how you feel about it. You can immerse yourself in sorrows and pain and make life miserable for yourself and others around you. Or, you can suppress all those negative sides and start living it while you can.

What could be more heartbreaking than losing someone dearest to you? If you are mourning someone’s death, you may very well have a different perspective on that. Something like what Tagore said,

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.

So, you can think of a new year or a new day as approaching to that dawn yourself, to reunite with the beloved one. You are getting one step closer to that with the start of a new day. We all will die someday eventually. If in life, our beloved ones wanted us to be happy, they certainly would not want us to be sad after they are gone. So, live your life as if it is the last day on earth. It will surely bring a smile on the departed souls.

If your life has turned upside down after an accident, just think about so many people who accomplished so much even in the face of unbearable challenges. One such example that comes to mind is the example of one of the greatest men of all time, Stephen Hawking. As he puts it

While there’s life, there is hope.

We all have problems. I myself had made loss and failed in several of my business attempts and been through unemployment. I had regrets that I couldn’t get over with. But I came across what someone said about problems – it goes like this:

Your problem is never really your problem, your reaction to your problem is your problem.

It changed my life as my reactions were actually my problems. Earlier, it never occurred to me that I complained so much, or refuse to take responsibility of my failure or blame someone else for everything bad that happened to me. But things changed after I changed my attitudes toward the problems.

So, let’s ask again, is observing new year really that significant? Can New Year really bring any change in our life?

The answer is yes, and it lies in our attitude. Your life is yours. Nothing can change your life unless you let it change. New Year is just a thought, an idea, a motivation to start anew. It’s the time when everyone in the world observes it with such great enthusiasm for a better turn in their lives. So, let’s participate, even if you are pretending to be happy. Light a fire cracker and send it up in the sky with your sorrows. Embrace the sorrows and live with it. They are a part of you. But life needs to go on, so participate in life’s new adventure every day. Let’s wake up with a new dream, new passion, and new hope every morning. Let’s include that in our new year’s list of activities.
