What are the benefits of reading?

When we wake up in the morning, we usually go to our doorstep to check whether the hawker has kept the newspaper at our doorstep or not. Without reading newspaper in the morning, the whole day would turn dull and drab. We go through the newspaper while sipping our morning tea. These two coincides each other. In our pastime, we often go through books such as novels, short stories and journals to pass our time or enjoying it as a hobby. The question is: What are the benefits of reading? There may be several possible answers to suggest.

Reading acquires you knowledge

People read to gather information, to learn something. For example, if you want to know what is happening in the field of science, space, or human immortality, you will read a science book on the topic. If you want to know what’s going on in your country then you can go through newspapers or surf internet to find that out. When you want to know the meaning of a word such as ‘pterodactyl’, you look it up in a dictionary.

Reading brings you joy

People read for pleasure. Many people read various types of books such as novels, short stories, adventure stories etc depending upon their taste. For example, people enjoy adventure stories because they want to know what happens next, what the ending is. They also enjoy reading about people doing things that they themselves would never have the chance of doing.

Reading quenches the thirst for curiosity

We all are curious about other people, about our favorite stars, scientists, doctors, eccentric millionaires and so on. We read to find out about others’ lives. If our interest is aroused, we want to learn as much as we can about real people who do unusual things.

Reading helps reaching a decision

Reading can also help us make up our minds, about how we should lead our lives or act at a certain situation. It can help us decide what is right and what is wrong. It can shape our opinions and influence our views. For instance, our lives are guided by what we read in the Holy Books and in the biographies of greatest men such as Gautam Buddha, Muhammad (SM), Jesus Christ and so on.

Reading gives you a picture of the past

People read about the past so that they can understand and appreciate the present in which they live. By reading we can compare things of the past and to the present. Also it helps us to lead forward for the future.

Reading gives you freedom

Reading frees your mind bounded by the shackles of social tradition, common conception, stereotyping, and other forms of bindings that exist. It opens your eyes for the immense possibilities of freedom and choice.

Reading gives you imagination

Einstein said that Imagination is more powerful than knowledge as knowledge has boundaries but imagination doesn’t. Reading can broaden our imagination.

Reading provides vacation from mundane life

When reading, you can forget what’s going on around you. It can be your favorite vacation from everything that is going around you, it can take you to its own world of imagination and peace.
