Nurturing creativity among students for a better future

Nurturing creativity among students should be the aim of education. However, for some reasons, education system is revolving in a vicious cycle of turning students into mindless money earning machines. We need to do something to break free from this vicious cycle. It’s high time we change our attitude and bring some positive results for the society. Here are some ideas I have about nurturing creativity among students.

Encouraging students about the positive outcome of creativity

Now people are crazy about getting A+ in the examinations. As a result, students memorize notes prepared by others, which is a great obstacle to nurturing creativity. They think their mind is a container to store information. In fact, such notion do provide results in the existing orthodox education system. In the long run, however, it does not produce anything good for them or for the society.

We take the easy way, and we encourage the young minds to do the same. We forget that one Einstein or Rabindranath or Lalon or Picasso can bring about so much beautiful changes in the world than millions of those money making machines can bring. Creativity may seem difficult to achieve as it requires effort and patience. Actually it doesn’t require as much effort as you may think. The whole process is enjoyable and rather easy. We just need to give it a try.

Instilling a sense of wonder among students

The sense of wonder is the driving force for creating something new. Our wonders about the mystery of nature led us to the discovery of so many things. It is our duty to arouse a sense of wonder in the minds of the students.

We need to introduced them to the beauty and mystery of nature – high mountains, vast seas, woods, the changing color of the sky, and of course, space – the final frontier. We need them to realize how beautiful our existence is, how wondrous and unimaginable is the notion of conscience and how mysterious is everything. They should also be made familiar with our history, culture, and achievements in science and technology. It will initiate a base of creativity in their minds.

Encouraging students to draw pictures

In order to improve observation power of students, we should inspire them to draw pictures. Drawing pictures requires one to observe objects minutely – the size and shape, colors and shades. While doing it, they will discover how diverse the nature is! Unconsciously, they will develop a love for the beauty of nature.

Helping students with developing writing habit

Writing is a practice that helps students improving their logical thinking, aesthetics, power of communication etc. It helps them think, developing their own opinions, realization about themselves and their surroundings.

Help students grow problem solving skills

Greatest people who ever lived on earth and contributed their gifts to mankind did learn their lessons in the face of adversities. Students should be trained to learn from the problems they face. They should be given problems for solving. Through their practice, they will learn to analyze problems and find possible solutions. The habit they will form through the practice will go a long way in their future.

All students are endowed with creative faculties. They only need to be led to the path of cultivating those faculties. I hope these ideas of nurturing creativity among students encourages you in leading them to that path.
