Fighting unemployment and becoming independent

Bangladesh is one of the most populated countries of the world. It has vast resources but maximum are unexplored. The resources that have been explored became useless due to lack of proper planning, utilization, and skilled man power. Common middle class try hard to survive in the worst economical condition. Under such circumstances, an unemployed family member is nevertheless a burden – whether others express it or not. In this article, I will share some real life experience on fighting unemployment and becoming independent.

Don’t be disheartened if you are unemployed. Get yourself admitted in one of the Technical Training Centers, or Vocational Training Institutes. There are many courses/trades like Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Electrical, Automotive, General Electronics, Welding & Fabrication, Computer application etc. Just chose and complete one. Some courses are absolutely free. You will gain self confidence after completing a course. You know something, and you can utilize your skills to get a job or get self-employed.

Everybody will love you when you will earn money. But if you stay hungry; nobody is going to feed you. Forget your status. Stop being an orthodox middle class, stop thinking – ‘I am a son or daughter of an Officer; my grandfather is a landlord; what will other people think if I do this!’ You should bear in mind that society will blame you for your unemployment and never give you a job.

I want to share a true story of my life. One of my friends used to come late after attending college. I asked him about his delay. He told that he was learning how to drive a car so they didn’t have to hire a driver. They were going to buy a new car soon. It reminded me of his reply when I expressed my wish to learn driving from him. He replied, “Only people from lower class society learn to drive; you are not poor, besides your father is a respectable man of the society, what people will think of you? Shame on you!” Those words still ring in my ear.

Next day, I got myself admitted in a driving school and learned driving. Believe it or not, this driving soon became very helpful in my life. I earned foreign currencies while working in Saudi Arabia not as a driver but as a reputed air conditioning technician who would go to work riding his own car. Expatriate Bangladeshis have shown me love and respect. At home, in Govt. service, I saved many persons by taking them to hospitals at dead hours of night. I brought values to my acquaintances, myself and to my country by learning something useful, in my case it was car driving.

I recommend everyone not to run after the employer for job; let the employer run after you and this is possible only when you have developed some skills and learnt something.

Learn and train yourself, whatever possible by you. Take an oath, not to be unemployed anymore. Read, learn and earn; this should be your motto of life. Wipe off your tears of sorrows, forget your status, forget the harmful words of your rich friends and train yourself to get employed. Remember, your friends may betray you but your learning will always be on your side.
